Rethymno: Olive Oil Tasting with Cretan Food Pairing

About This Experience

Of the eight tours on this site, this is the one that treats olive oil as a subject in its own right. Three hours in a monumental grove near Rethymno, four oils tasted properly, and a four-course menu built to show what each one does to food. Nothing else is bolted on — no winery, no cave, no pottery.

The setting does a lot of the work. The tasting table is set under the trees in a grove where some specimens are around 2,000 years old, including the stand the operator calls the Gethsemane Garden. You walk it before you sit down, which is when the harvest and extraction material lands — why fruit has to reach a press within hours, and what changes if it does not.

The tasting itself is the most technical on the island. Four oils in sequence, each paired with a course, with instruction on how to judge bitterness and the peppery catch at the back of the throat, how to store oil so it does not oxidise, which oil to cook with and which to finish with, and how to read a label in a shop. People come away able to taste the difference rather than just told that there is one.

Two practical points. There is no transfer included — you drive to Pigi and park at the stadium opposite, or arrange a transfer with the operator at extra cost. And this is deliberately not a mill visit: if you want to watch a press turn, pair it with a Kolymvari or Heraklion mill, or come during the November-to-February harvest and do both.

What Travelers Say

We had such an amazing experience and learned a lot about the olive oil, its history, the different types and about Crete in general. Aspassia was the perfect guide and is so knowledgeable about anything involving olives. Would highly recommend the activity to anyone, it was a highlight of our trip. Beautiful property as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from a mill tour?

A mill tour shows you how oil is made; this teaches you to judge the result. Three hours in a 2,000-year-old grove, four oils tasted in sequence against a four-course menu, and instruction on tasting, buying, storing and cooking. No press is running in front of you — that is the trade-off, and it is why some people do both.

Is transport included?

No. You make your own way to Validé at Pigi, near Rethymno, where there is free parking at the football stadium opposite. The operator can arrange a transfer on request for an extra fee, which is worth pricing before you compare this against tours that include pickup.

What does the four-course menu involve?

A degustation menu paired course by course with different olive oils, so you taste what each oil does to food rather than sampling it on bread alone. Local spirits and water are included alongside.

How old are the trees?

The grove is described as monumental and around 2,000 years old — considerably older than a working commercial grove, and the reason the walk is part of the experience rather than a way to fill time between courses.

Is it worth $108 for three hours?

It is the most expensive per hour on this site, and the most specialised. If you want to leave Crete able to taste oil properly and buy it well, this is the one that does that. If you want a day out with lunch and several stops, the full-day Heraklion or Chania tours cost the same or less.
